Retirement for Smokey the Bear Ends 25 Years of Service
Washington officials announce Smokey the Bear, the Forest Service symbol for fire prevention, will retire after 25 years. A 4 year old male dubbed Little Smokey will succeed him, joining his mate Goldie in a peaceful New Mexico retirement at Ghost Ranch near Santa Fe. The ceremony at the National Zoo marks the transition from Smokey to Little Smokey, both orphaned in New Mexico.

Senate to probe DEA bungling drug enforcement efforts
Senate hearings will target the Drug Enforcement Administration amid reports of inefficiency infighting and corruption within the federal drug enforcement apparatus. Andrew Tartaglino, former acting deputy director, will testify about internal investigations being short-circuited and a shift of focus to low level arrests. Operation Silver Dollar and ties to Howard Hughes are under scrutiny as the DEA faces criticism since its 1973 creation.
