Farm Service Agency opens 2013 DCP and ACRE signups
The Lorain and Medina Cuyahoga FSA remind producers enrollment for the 2013 Direct and Counter-Cyclical Payment and Average Crop Revenue Election programs began Feb 19. DCP ends Aug 2 and ACRE ends June 3. Eligible participants may choose either program for 2013 and must meet basic farm, reporting, and conservation requirements. Sugar beets rise again as ethanol source in California
In Five Points and Mendota California a $5 million state grant funds a Fresno County demonstration plant to convert energy beets into ethanol. If successful a commercial refinery will follow to produce biofuel, boosting rural jobs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Beets offer ethanol yields over twice those of corn per acre, backed by university experts and energy officials.
