Eight area winners named in Norwalk contest
Eight area girls have been named winners of the Ene Aaron counties contest of the International Beauty Pageant. Tryouts and interviews for the regional contest were held March 12. Winners include Marie Spiegel Lori Gunn Gerry Ann Barron Michele Christian Francie Howarth Lori Springer Cindy Ann Neer. The eight advance to the state contest at Wooster College July 2 to 6.

Local youths and residents are noted for military service and education achievements. Nicholas Grachanin III and David Slavik Jr join Operation Promise programs with Avon Lake High School on track to July 31 basic training at Lackland Texas. Marine Lance Cpl Luis Morales reports for duty Camp Lejeune North Carolina. Major Keith Bischell earns the Meritorious Service Medal at Hancock Field New York and holds advanced degrees from Ohio State University. Captain Richard Dawe graduates with an MS in logistics management from Wright Patterson and is reassigned to Tyndall Florida. Staff Sergeant Carol Herbst arrives at Fort Meade Maryland as a personal affairs counselor. Coast Guard Cadet Scott Laidlaw makes the Dean’s List at the U S Coast Guard Academy and will be commissioned ensign. Marine Private Herbal Starkey completes Parris Island training. Airman Robert Wittreich earns Chanute assignment after Lackland training. Also noted is the world’s largest captive gorilla from Ringling Bros Barnum and Bailey Circus with measurements at 19 years old.

Sheffield Lake man acquitted in burglary case
A 41 year old Sheffield Lake man James Haviland was found innocent by a common pleas court jury after a two day trial before Judge John D. Pincura on a burglary charge regarding the December 22, 1972 theft at the General Electric Warehouse Avon. He remains jailed on a U S District hold for a separate stolen car offense while on probation. The jury of seven women and five men deliberated three hours. Other courtroom actions include Diaz Reyes and Angel Rivera receiving prison terms for burglary and assault with a dangerous weapon, while Richard Waldorf and Thomas Jackson faced probation for burglary and bad checks respectively. Additional cases were referred for pre sentencing reports.
