Unlisted Subscribers Linked to Education and Income Gaps

Toledo researchers Brunner and Brunner found that unlisted telephone subscribers show lower education and income levels than listed subscribers. From 688 listed and 02 unlisted sampled, 3.9% vs 11.8% college graduates, over 64% of unlisted earn under 8,000 dollars, and 17% exceed 10,000. Differences appear in marriage, occupation, home ownership, and age.

Public opinion favors limits on televised political ads

A Foote, Cone & Belding survey conducted after the elections finds about 75 percent of adults want some restriction on political TV ads. Sixty five percent favor controlling the ads and nine percent want shorter campaign length.

Health cost of smoking may be 5.3 billion yearly

Public Health Service cites a study by James L Hedrick estimating annual health costs of smoking at about 5.3 billion dollars. Hedrick, an economist from Alexandria, factors in income and medical expenses, noting the figure is 20 percent above the 4.4 billion dollars now spent on cigarettes in the United States each year.

State pollution suits hit two Cleveland companies

Ohio Attorney General William J. Brown filed suits in Cuyahoga Common Pleas Court against Metals Applied Inc and International Salt Co for discharging cyanide chromic acid and 26 tons of salt daily into the Cuyahoga River without permits. He called the actions non permit polluters and pressed for end to water pollution and reform of permit granting.

Elyria bypass and Route 10 20 relocation near completion

State Highway Department says the northwest bypass linking Rt 57 to Rt 113 and the relocation of Rt 10 20 south of Elyria will be completed in June. Delays due to weather and strikes pushed back three projects, with three sections forming a larger Oberlin to Interchange 9 link costing about 14 million dollars and no city funding.
