President Roosevelt May Face Railroad Wage Dispute
Washington March 31 The railroad wage dispute remains unsettled as mediator Joseph B Eastman struggles to reach a deal between rail managers and labor representatives. A settlement likely awaits the President's return from the southern trip. Eastman disclosed tentative proposals centered on restoring a ten percent wage cut in effect since January 1932. Railroads argue for restoration only with higher revenues while unions insist reduced wages already justify restoration. Rail employment effects and deferred maintenance are cited by both sides as factors in any resolution.
