Grafton man undergoes rare kidney pancreas transplant

Kevin Younglas of Grafton, 28, remained in critical but stable condition at the Cleveland Clinic after a late Friday kidney and pancreas transplant. The dual procedure, among about 500 worldwide, is one of only a few performed at the Clinic, with Younglas having waited nearly a year for both organs. His diabetes led to kidney loss and vision impairment, and he had continued dialysis during the wait.

White House cautious on Gorbachev test ban talks

The White House urged Moscow to accept Reagan's long standing proposal for expert talks on limiting nuclear tests. President Reagan favors a summit with Gorbachev to discuss a broader set of issues, with a Nevada test observation offer on the table and a potential Europe summit in the summer. Rep Ted Weiss warned Gorbachev's rhetoric may hinder progress though he sees positive urgency to halt testing.

Local firms help in statue fix-up

Abex Corp and Kasper Foundry supply key components for the Statue of Liberty renovation costing over 200 million dollars. Abex at Taylor Street and Abbe Road made stainless steel treads for the spiral stairs and nosings for the base. Kasper Foundry at Oberlin Road casts about 70 iron steps. National Park Service schedules 16 000 to 18 000 visitors on July 5 when the statue reopens, with about half climbing to the crown. Abex employs about 200 at the Elyria plant, the former Electro-Alloys Co, now part of IC Industries Inc's Abex Division.
