Elyria city plans a 75 percent tax exemption for the Midway Mall and May Co. over 15 years, sparking school district concerns that state funds would not be replaced and that about 96 thousand dollars a year would be diverted from the schools. Officials argue the plan brings mall improvements and future benefits, while district attorney Timothy Armstrong says the move costs big bucks. Superintendent Lester Schultz criticizes the automatic exemption as council oversight not required.
In North Ridgeville David A. Schmittle 22 shot and seriously wounded his father in law James Girard 52 with a .357 Magnum before turning the gun on himself. Girard is in serious but stable condition after surgery. The shooting followed Schmittle and his wife Holly’s estrangement and a recent marital breakup.
Edward Doehne withdrew from the Elyria May 7 Democratic primary ballot for City Council after a county election inquiry. Lorain County Prosecutor Gregory White said his office issued the ruling following a request by Lorain County Board of Elections Director Iris Gracia to verify Doehne's eligibility.
A 16 year old Elyria West High sophomore was arrested at noon Thursday for carrying a concealed weapon after school officials found an unloaded .22 caliber two shot derringer in his bag. He received a 10 day suspension and faces expulsion.
Washington AP reports Lee Atwater, the renegade political tactician who led President Bush's 1988 campaign and later headed the Republican Party, died today at age 40 after more than a year battling a brain tumor. The longtime adviser from South Carolina passed away in Washington.
The World War II battleship Wisconsin arrives at Norfolk Naval Base with six Lorain County crew aboard after 226 days in the Persian Gulf War. Families greet 45,000 relatives as the ship, part of a nine-ship battle group centered on the aircraft carrier John F Kennedy, makes a triumphal, emotional homecoming.
