Lava flow slows as it nears Hilo on Mauna Loa eruption
A 13 mile lava river from Mauna Loa crawls toward Hilo with the front roughly halfway from summit to town. Civil defense notes no immediate threat to residences, though some residents evacuate voluntarily as about 1 million cubic yards pour hourly from the vent.
