Chris Assenheimer reports on Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge weighing the fourth starter battle between Jason Stanford Chad Durbin and Jake Westbrook. Veterans Lou Merijoni Johnny Mac and Ricky Gutierrez compete for infield spots while Alex Escobar appears locked for opening day with Coco Crisp starting in Buffalo.
Boston shortstop Nomar Garciaparra likely will miss opening day due to inflammation in his right Achilles tendon. Team doctor Bill Morgan said progression is uncertain, with Garciaparra noting he will be out a few more days but remains optimistic while aiming to avoid a recurrence. Manager Terry Francona indicated he would not play April 4 if live pitching isn’t possible first.
Texas Rangers pitcher Jeff Zimmerman will undergo exploratory elbow surgery next week to assess latent damage after two prior reconstructive procedures. The 31 year old right-hander has not pitched since October 7, 2001, and aims for a best case six week absence. He met with Dr. Lewis Yocum on Saturday to determine the extent of damage and recovery prospects.
Jason Davis allowed seven earned runs on seven hits and five walks in 5 2/3 innings as the Cleveland Indians lost 10-2 to the Cincinnati Reds at Ed Smith Stadium. Manager Eric Wedge cited an erratic delivery and poor fastball command as the main issues, with Davis noting the need to stay focused. The outing followed his March 11 debut, and Davis may return to minor league or simulated games to regain consistency.
Indians manager Eric Wedge announced Jeff D'Amico will be the fourth starter, pushing Jake Westbrook to bullpen duties. D'Amico, 23, impressed with a 3.40 ERA over five spring appearances including a strong start against Montreal, while Westbrook shifts to relief after a 7-10, 4.33 season last year. Durbin and Stanford remain candidates for the final rotation spot as Cleveland fine tunes its pitching staff ahead of opening day.
