Oscars long on glitz short on promises
New York AP reports the 72nd Academy Awards aired by ABC from Shrine Auditorium ran four hours eight minutes, a record length despite promises of a shorter show. Billy Crystal hosted for the seventh time, with musical tributes and a standout Michael Caine moment. Nielsen places viewership around 78 million, though overnight ratings slipped slightly.
