Guatemala City coup topples Lucas Garcia junta forms

In Guatemala City tanks and artillery targeted the National Palace as junior officers ousted President Romeo Lucas Garcia. A five man provisional junta formed then trimmed to three led by Gen Jose Efrain Rios Montt. Streets erupted in celebrations as mass protests and Armed forces shift signaled pursuit of a new democracy amid looming civil conflict.
