Layoffs Mount at Ford Brook Park Engine Complex
Ford Motor Co will permanently lay off about 600 workers at the Brook Park engine complex beginning April 21. About 6,800 more workers in two Brook Park engine plants will be idled for two weeks starting April 7 to slow V-8 production. Union leader Thurman Payne notes this marks the first time permanent layoffs were used at the complex and says the overall furloughs raise Brook Park’s monthly laid off total above 9,000, with roughly 3,500 already on indefinite layoff this year. The plants and foundry supply engines for Ford car models hit by weak demand. Brook Park’s No 2 engine plant faces a 24-month shutdown for retooling to small car engines, potentially affecting about 1,200 workers over 2–3 years. A target for a new V-6 at Brook Park was discussed but no final decision exists on which small engine will be produced there.
