Bendix Council UAW-CIO Opens Elyria Conference Here

Delegates from Bendix Council UAW-CIO gather in Elyria for a three day conference to elect 1951 officers. The meeting features an opening address by Pat O Malley and a planned tour of Bendix-Westinghouse Automotive Air Brake Co. plant. The council covers 20 000 Bendix workers across multiple plants including Elyria Detroit South Bend Elmira and North Hollywood. Last Day To Register In Elyria Primary Vote

Elyria voters must register by 9 p.m. tonight to participate in the Tuesday primary. The Lorain County Board of Elections office remains open to accept registrations from residents 21 and older who recently moved to Elyria or within Lorain County or who have not voted in two years.

Advisory Group In School Bond Drive To Meet

Invitations have gone to 117 Elyrians on the Citizens' Advisory committee from the 1949 bond campaign to a progress report meeting by the Elyria Board of Education. The $3,700,000 program will be updated, with school officials explaining specific phases. An exhibit highlights the Franklin school design prepared for the 1951 AASA meeting in Atlantic City. Outcast & Guenther of Cleveland, architects, won blue ribbon at a school design show. Meeting at 8 p.m. in Room 130 of the Washington building.

President Howard C. Geilmar has called a special meeting for seven oclock tomorrow evening to discuss aspects of the school building program. At 8 p m the board will join the Citizens Advisory Committee for a full progress report on the modernization and building program of the past year.

Tobey presses to extend Senate crime probe

Senator Charles W. Tobey urged a vote today to extend the Senate Crime Committee inquiry beyond its Saturday expiration. Supported by Senators O Connor and Wiley, the move faced opposition from chair Estes Kefauver who urged a permanent commission instead. The open sessions ended with tax and narcotics testimony. three key witnesses from the Cleveland Syndicate remain to be questioned in a closed session Friday. Citations were voted against Rothkopf and Kleinman.

VFW Post 1079 will formally install new officers for the coming year at 2 PM Sunday at the post home on East Bridge Street. Lloyd Kinney becomes Post Commander, succeeding Edwin Gaillard. Church Members Contribute 8800 For Building Fund

Members of the First Baptist church brought bags of cash to the Joash Chest after service totaling 8800 dollars for the church building fund. The church aims for a 50000 dollar building drive with an additional 900 dollars raised for missionaries and other items.

Lorain County Struggles With Highways Repair Crisis

Lorain County faces major highway problems after a harsh winter that damaged routes 10 and 301 and left Gulf road and others in poor shape. Boy Hurt As Car Skids Into Tree During 13th Birthday Celebration

Mathew Cunningham 13, of Cleveland, was badly hurt when the car carrying him and Carlton B. Adams 29 of Lakewood skidded into a tree on Cleveland road near Root road. Cunningham suffered a fractured jaw and thigh, head injuries and shock. he was hospitalized at Elyria Memorial and later transferred to Glenville Hospital. Adams had minor injuries. he said the crash occurred while driving to Elyria airport for a birthday plane ride after another vehicle failed to stop at Root road. The 1951 car was demolished.

Truck Driver Held After Route 10 Accident

Deputy sheriffs arrested William H. Hannas Jr. 34 Norwalk for driving while intoxicated after his tractor and double trailers loaded with 51 000 pounds of steel left the road on Route 10 west of Route 301. Traffic blockage followed as another truck attempted to help. Hannas claimed he left Route 10 club and then played tag with trucks with no lights. He awaits arraignment.

Edward W. Bembower was elected head of The Elyria Elks Lodge at the annual officers election. He succeeds Exalted Ruler Ralph Gardner. Man Wanted In Thefts Taken Into Custody

Lorain suspect Marshall Berry known as Pretty Poppa, 42, arrested after returning to Lorain from Cleveland where he had been living at 2252 East 40th Street. He faces charges of grand larceny and receiving stolen property tied to thefts of $10, cigars worth $62, and a $900 suit, part of a ring that stole about $3,500 in merchandise. Other ring members are named, with Berry previously involved in major local trials. He will be arraigned in common pleas court.
