Tax Reporting For Employers Simplified Under Amendments

Under the amended Social Security Act, employer tax reporting is simplified by aligning unemployment compensation and old age and survivor insurance tax provisions. Federal unemployment taxes are now based on wages paid, as for old-age insurance. The first $3,000 of an employee’s annual wages remain taxable for federal tax. Congress leaves unemployment compensation largely unchanged except for employer taxes, and the law allows refunds and adjustments for late 1936 1937 1938 contributions to state unemployment funds.
