Bitter Fight On Gas Tax Bill Seen
In Columbus on March 2 a bitter fight over the Sullivan gas tax bill loomed as the House Highways Committee reported it for passage despite administration opposition. The committee vote was 16 for and 2 against with Norton of Cleveland and Weaver of Akron dissenting. The bill would allocate 26 percent to townships, 10 percent to counties by motor registration, 19 percent shared, 45 percent to the state highway department, and 1 percent to cities. Administration leaders sought to delay action, opposing a $2 million township road construction appropriation in the general revenue bill. The committee also approved the Creighton highway police bill, amended to restrict officers outside municipalities, by a 15 to 2 vote with Sharp and Anderson opposing.
