Ruth L. Herzer 86 a longtime Lorain area auxiliary charter member died Wednesday at Elyria United Methodist Village after a long life connected to St. John’s United Church of Christ and local clubs. She leaves a daughter Charlene and two sons, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Services set at Elyria United Methodist Village with interment at Ridge Hall Memorial Park Amherst Township. Memorials to March of Dimes Ohio Chapter or Community Health Partners Foundation. Pianist Richard Zsebik Dead at 67 in Elyria Hospice Care

Richard Paul Zsebik 67 a Lorain resident and professional pianist died Tuesday at home under hospice care after a cancer diagnosis. A 1954 Clearview High School graduate he served in the Air Force and worked as a U S Postal Service clerk before retiring in 1992. Survivors include wife Patricia and siblings Elmer Barbara Lillian. Burial with military honors followed a prayer service at Wyers Funeral Chapel. He played locally and belonged to wildlife NRA and postal unions.

George A. Jones 93 Amherst resident dies after long illness

George A. Jones of Amherst and former Lorain resident, aged 93, died Wednesday at Oak Hills Nursing Center after a long illness. A lifelong Lorain County native who moved to Amherst in 1966, he worked 46 years in U.S. Steel Lorain’s shipping department and belonged to United Steelworkers Local 1104. Survived by wife Virginia, daughters Carole Shawver and Mary Ann Coghlan, multiple stepchildren and grandchildren, he was a St Joseph Church attendee and lifelong traveler. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday at Garland Misencik Funeral Home with burial in Ridge Hill Township. Memorials to Alzheimer’s Association welcomed.

Teachers union seeks test delay in Ohio

Delegates at the Ohio Federation of Teachers convention unanimously endorsed delaying the 10th grade graduation test by two years to improve understanding of curriculum changes from 2001 02. About 250 delegates also supported a moratorium on opening new charter schools as the union represents about 20 000 teachers and other school employees.

Avon Lake man jailed for year plus after mail fraud spree

Mara A. Johnson a Maple Heights resident received an 18 month federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to 10 counts of mail fraud. Avon Lake police began investigating in December 2002 over a scheme involving Midwest Tours and Adventure Travel in Avon Lake. Johnson canceled trips and failed to refund about 7000 dollars to the travel company, which had contracted him to take 15 clients to Atlantic City. He has prior theft and fraud convictions in multiple suburbs and faces Mahoning County charges as well. US Judge Dan Polster ordered repayment to the travel firm.

Cops receive federal grant to add school officers

Lorain Police will use a 250000 grant from the Justice Department to add two school-based officers for three years. U S Rep Sherrod Brown and Police Chief Del Rivera praised the program as boosting safety and school partnerships as part of 20.7 million in COPS in schools grants to 131 agencies in 42 states and Puerto Rico.

Judge denies travel for Islamic cleric in Cleveland

U S District Judge James Gwin refused Fawaz Mohammed Damra permission to travel to a conference in Virginia. Damra, leader of the Islamic Center of Cleveland, faces possible deportation if convicted of false citizenship information from 1994.
