State tournament notebook highlights Class A teams and players
Continuity matters as three of four Class A coaches have eight plus years at their schools. Wynford star Phil Gebhardt, a 5-11 guard, hit the winning 50-49 shot over Wayne Trace and is praised by Wynford coach Rob Sheldon for his versatility and 10 assists per game. Dayton Dunbar’s Mike Haley carries a 9-1 state record as coach, while Dayton Jefferson features football-driven stars Mike Boykin and Paul Williams. Buckeye Trail’s undersized but feisty lineup, led by Roger Negin and Gene Legeza, battles Fort Laramie in a tight Class A matchup watched from Buckeye Trail's bench and press row alignments. The tournament, hosted by Ohio State next year, draws media interest and notes Dayton’s hospitality in the press room.
