Ohio education reforms urged by Essex at North Ridgeville dinner
Ohio State School Supt Martin W Essex urged reform and redesign of elementary and secondary education to curb unemployability and raise standards with greater funding via an income tax while noting Ohio’s reliance on state funding has slipped from 50 percent in the 1940s to about 30 percent today. He warned that by 1975 most new jobs would require skills, making expanded vocational education essential as Ohio’s student and school staff population rises beyond one third of state residents. Rep Charles A Mosher echoed limited federal funds but supported vocational education and suggested forthcoming tax-cut considerations.
