Escapees captured after seven hour chase from Ohio to Lexington
Three young federal prisoners and two female hostages escaped from a Cleveland jail and led a two state pursuit before police recovered them near Lexington. Thomas 20, Sykes 22, Carpenter 19 were recaptured when their stolen cruiser blew a tire at a roadblock on I 7. No injuries were reported.

Elyria Marine Carris Francis Killed in Vietnam Action
An 18 year old Elyria Marine and former Chronicle Telegram carrier, Carris M. Francis, died from head wounds suffered Monday in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. He served with Company L, Third Battalion Seventh Marine Regiment, First Marine Division after enlisting in 1968. Francis attended Elyria High, Midview, and Milan schools, worked as a CT carrier, trained at Camp Lejeune and Parris Island, and served aboard a US Navy seagoing detachment. He is survived by his parents, a brother and two sisters. Funeral details will be announced by Wainwright Funeral Home.

March Winds Roar Across Lorain County Causing Injuries
A ten hour wind event across Lorain County caused a spate of accidents and injuries. In Norwalk two Oberlin workers, Robert Olson and Walter Higdon, were injured when a 9 by 20 foot concrete block toppled during construction at a Precison Plastics site, both undergoing surgery. Harriet Childs of Elyria was treated for cuts and a fractured wrist after wind blew a storefront window onto her. A brick section collapsed at a Lorain corner injuring no one listed, while the Tower Drive-In screen in Elyria Township prompted area police to warn residents. Police noted Lakeside gusts reached 69 mph in places. Reports indicate a three hour truck travel ban on the Ohio Turnpike due to crashes.

The Karis learn their son Captain Paul Kari is alive and a prisoner in North Vietnam after a 1965 aircraft loss. Mrs Mary Pamer, Kari’s grandmother, tears up as news reaches from Philadelphia via a phone call. Kari, 25, had been missing in action since June 23, 1965, when his plane was shot down over Vietnam.

Thieves steal bags from bank customer on Abbe Road
A bank customer on North Abbe Road was robbed of two empty money bags and a purse after leaving Lorain County Savings and Trust. Caryl Hinton of Elyria said a man demanded the bags and her purse at 3 p.m. They fled in a car later found abandoned. owner ship of the vehicle is under investigation.
