Easter heat surprises Elyria city with record warmth

A warm Easter brought sun and record high temperatures to Elyria and neighboring cities. Churches were crowded, traffic slowed, and parks filled as residents enjoyed a coatless holiday tempered by forecasts of cooler days ahead. Temperatures soared to 90 in nearby areas, breaking the old 77 degree record from 1945. Rain was expected to follow, with cooler days forecast Tuesday and Wednesday.

Railroad merger delayed by Supreme Court ruling

Washington AP Supreme Court splits four to four to halt the $6 billion Pennsylvania and New York Central railroad merger until the Interstate Commerce Commission reviews the impact on smaller railroads. Justice Clark says the decision does not rule on merger validity, while delay was sought by the DOJ and nine railroads. The ICC had studied the deal for about a decade and approved it last April, warning it could fall apart if delayed.

Thieves Take 2000 Auto Title Forms From Bureau

Police report a break-in at the Auto License Bureau on Broad Street in which two boxes of blank auto title forms were recovered but 2,000 forms remain missing. Three teens reported seeing two men flee with boxes near 1:30 p.m., leading to a police inquiry into entry gained through a roof hole at 561 Broad St and a damaged wall panel.

Air and ground battles surge across South Vietnam and North Vietnam

American airmen shot down a Communist MIG over North Vietnam as ground fighting raged from the 17th Parallel to the Mekong Delta. In the delta, Can Tho and Vinh Long were scenes of heavy engagement with helicopters and C47 gunships supporting South Vietnamese forces. Marines at Con Thien suffered six dead and 28 wounded as U.S. and allied units pressed attacks amid ongoing brutal fighting. The day included air strikes, naval gunfire, and a reported high number of Vietnamese casualties, with continuing weather hampering operations.

Youths Suspected in LaGrange Barn Fire

A barn on Fred Smith farm Diagonal Road burned early today in what authorities label arson. State arson inspectors will review a possible link to three prior county blazes last weekend. Separately, an abandoned Rochester Township house burned, another was saved by firefighters, and a Columbia Township farmhouse narrowly escaped when vandals’ kerosene failed to ignite it.

Farm barn blaze kills livestock. theft suspects sought

A Lorain County barn fire at the Smith farm destroyed the 45 by 75 foot structure along with a tractor, manure spreader, milk cooler, grain, hay, lumber and tools. Four lambs and four ewes perished, with up to eight lambs possibly lost. Smith reported seeing youths in a tan and white 1964 car fleeing down Diagonal Ad toward Penfield. no license obtained. Fire crews from LaGrange and Carlisle battled the seven hour blaze, with no injuries. The loss is estimated at $15,000, including 10,600 for the barn and 500 for sheep, with other items damaged. The investigation continues.

Parma Heights motorcyclist dies in fiery Rt. 57 crash

Nicholas Diaiovanni 29 of Parma Heights died when his northbound motorcycle collided with a southbound car at Rt. 57 and Chestnut Ridge Rd. The car driven by Wesley Evanson 49 of Columbia Station turned onto Chestnut Ridge. Evanson and his daughter 15 were treated and released. Diaiovanni died at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Charges pending.
