Lifelong educator Donald Breen dies at 78 in Amherst

Retired Lorain teacher and historian Donald Breen 78 of Amherst died Thursday at Grace Hospital after a long illness. Born in Wilkinsburg Pennsylvania he moved to Vermilion in 1922 and later lived in Amherst from 1960. A World War I Navy veteran he studied at Defiance College Kent State and earned a Master’s in History. He taught in Lorain schools and published Civil War work on Johnson’s Island. Survived by wife Elaine two sons two daughters 9 grandchildren and two sisters. Visitation Monday at Hempel Funeral Home with Legion service and VFW honor guard. Funeral Tuesday at St Joseph Catholic Church Amherst. Memorials to Amherst VFW Post 1662 scholarship in Americanism.
