Ohio Edison Co and Pennsylvania Power Co report a 10.1 percent rise in consolidated net income for 1959. Net income after preferred dividends totaled 25,286,741 with earnings per share at 3.96. Sales rose 13.4 percent, 14,000 new customers added, residential rate unchanged at 2.57 cents per kWh. Major investments exceeded 56 million including the Stratton hydro project on the Ohio River and 335 acres in Jefferson County for future plants. 14 industrial expansions of 1 million or more were announced in the service area.

The new Directory of Ohio Manufacturers lists about 12 500 firms with full addresses and counts of male and female employees. It includes a code index by name industry and county and notes Cleveland area accounts for 21 percent of manufacturing employment. One in five production workers last year were female. The directory is sold by the Labor Statistics Division of the Ohio Department of Industrial Relations in Columbus for 15 cents.

Rail Shipment Increase Seen During 3 Months
The Great Lakes Region Rail Shippers Advisory Board forecast a nine tenths percent rise in rail carloadings for the second quarter, signaling a leveling off in business. Compared to 1955, grain fell 11.6 percent, salt rose 18.3 percent, iron and steel fell 11.9 percent, brick and clay up 10.6 percent, agricultural implements and nonauto vehicles down 11.1 percent, and autos and trucks up 28 percent.
