Break between state inspector and county sheriff erupts

An open rift surfaced between State Prohibition Inspector OG E Rankin and County Sheriff E G Mathews after Mathews removed badges from two Rankin aides Edward Mooroe and Harry Rankin son of the inspector. Deputies aided Rankin in raids and had brought Avon Lake storekeeper Joseph Degnan to jail on liquor charges. Rankin vowed to badge every deputy under his command while Mathews defended his action saying the aides were working against him politically. He said he alone is responsible for the deputy badges and hinted at more removals in the future.
