Westgate mall demise linked to anchor loss and stagnation

Patton and Fullington discuss Westgate’s decline after Dillard’s left and the space being eaten by rivals at Great Northern Mall. They argue lack of expansion and stagnant offerings doomed the mall, while other centers with strong anchors and prime location may weather Dillard’s shuttering of its Midway Mall store.

Westgate rebirth redefines open air shopping on Center Ridge

The Westgate project replaces the old mall with about 600000 square feet of open air stores and restaurants. It abandons high end venues for practical retailers like Marshall's and Target while offering convenient parking near shops. Critics note competition from enclosed malls in bad weather, but supporters say Westgate could spur regional development and attract investment.
