Kate Byrne 68 Lorain Resident Dies After Long Illness

Kathryn Fay Byrne nee Reese 68 of Lorain died Tuesday at Oak Hills Nursing Home after a long illness. Born in Cleveland she lived in Lorain since 1941. She worked at Lorain Products in the 1950s as Kathryn Paul and at the 2200 Bar before retiring in 1974 after ten years. Survived by Faye Vandergrift Loretta White 11 grandchildren six great grandchildren and sister Loretta Cruickshank predeceased by four grandchildren. Friends may call at John R. Devin Funeral Home Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with services Friday at 9:30 a.m.

USAir crash victims homeward bound as survivors mend

Three area survivors of USAir Flight 405 at LaGuardia were recovering today. Kathryn Gray set to leave Booth Memorial Medical Center in Flushing with husband Dean dead in the crash. Connie Merrill in stable condition at Jacobi Hospital. her husband Tom upgraded from critical to stable. The Merrills own Kerr Printing in Norwalk. Gray and the Merrills had traveled to Atlantic City before the crash. Also killed were Joseph and Marilyn Irvin of North Olmsted and Avon Lake counselor Jennifer Paloci. Avon Lake officials plan a memorial service for Paloci at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Church of Christ.

Judge Won't Reconsider Deputy Layoff Ruling in Lorain County

Visiting Judge Mark K. Wiest refused to reinstate fifteen Lorain County Sheriff's deputies and some support staff after layoffs aimed at cutting the budget. The decision leaves the deputies off the payroll, with the case likely to be appealed to the Ninth District Court of Appeals and a bill proposed to mandate road patrol duties for sheriffs.

Oberlin accident victim improves in Cleveland hospital status

A Cleveland woman injured in a March 15 car-van crash in front of the fire station has been upgraded from critical to satisfactory at MetroHealth Medical Center. Katie Jackson, 63, was hospitalized after the collision involving Dorothy J. Harris, 46, who remained in satisfactory condition. Other passengers and the van drivers were treated at area hospitals with varied outcomes.

Lorain jail inmate attempts death by own action

Lorain police report a 19 year old inmate Thomas O Phelps of West 12th Street attempted suicide in a jail holding cell by using a blanket noose. He was rushed to St Joseph Hospital and Health Center for treatment before being returned to jail on Tuesday night after X rays showed no injury.

Couple Hurt When Boulder in Road Traps Car

An Oberlin man, Wayne Johnson, 31, in fair condition with a chest bruise after his car struck a boulder on Route 58. His wife Tamara Johnson, 28, sustained minor injuries. The boulder was dislodged from a tractor trailer driven by Thomas Brydon Jr., 37, who turned into a parking lot near Route 58. Brydon was cited for injurious material on the highway. the Johnsons for not wearing seat belts.
