Slow start for 58th Academy Awards on ABC
The 58th Academy Awards began lively with a Flying Down to Rio inspired opening but dragged for hours. Only one major award in the first hour, then best supporting actor in the second hour. Viewership has fallen from 90 million in 1983 to 65 million in 1985, with critics saying the show favors spectacle over awards. Co-hosts Alda and Fonda opened, Williams joined as third host, and Muppets attempted to open the envelope amid jokes about tedium.
