Panthers focus on field events at Elyria Catholic
Elyria Catholic track coach Dick Elsasser says half the 60 boys trying out are for field events and he prioritizes weight events. He lost top weight athletes from last year's state Class AA championship cross country team and must rely on newcomers, with assistant Mike Sheck developing 14 or 15 weight contenders. Returning lettermen include Walt Gurtis and Scott Plas as weight standouts, while distance runners headed by Stetson and Brizes aim to boost state meet hopes. The Panthers open with a Bay Village triangular before a season of relays and district meets in Ohio.
