President Nixon says he ordered suspending the Paris talks on Vietnam to break a Communist filibuster. He indicates readiness to resume when North Vietnam and the Viet Cong are willing to negotiate seriously, while expressing slim optimism for success. He cites Vietnamization gains and previews a May troop withdrawal schedule. He defends ITT antitrust actions and notes Kleindienst is likely to be confirmed. He discusses SALT prospects with the Soviet Union and opposes marijuana legalization. He comments on Watson’s Paris talks and hints Agnew as running mate.
Jeffery M. Beckett nine was with his father at Stoney's Lanes in Elyria when six older youths dragged him outside and beat him. He was burned on the face with cigarettes and an unidentified powder before being treated and released from Elyria Memorial Hospital. Authorities investigate the incident at 8 22 p m.
A head on collision on Ohw 60 about five miles north of Marietta killed five people and left others injured. Victims identified include Roane Lee Stark 19 and Steve Martney 17, both with severe burns. Other injured were Randall Brooks Perkins 22 from Parkersburg and Karen Mauley and Sharon Melee of Parkersburg.
In Buenos Aires Fiat executives sought to secure the life of Oberdan Sallustro, Tralinin manager for Argentina, held by a six or seven member commando. The government rejected ransom negotiations and barred external intervention declaring the affair internal. The captured executive faced a noon Sunday execution after a dawn snatch near his home.
In Belfast, IRA leaders from both the provisional and official wings rejected any truce after Britain imposed direct rule in Northern Ireland. Sean MacStiofain said talks of a ceasefire are rot and that peace depends on the three points he cited: British troops withdrawn, full amnesty for political prisoners, and Irish self-determination. A British army spokesman reported a quiet night with scattered incidents including mine and gunfire near Newry and Belfast. MacStiofain warned of defensive actions by the provisional IRA and vigilante patrols increasing in Catholic neighborhoods.
Mayor Leonard Reichlin outlined a plan to hire two meter men in downtown Elyria and raise overtime parking fines from 25 cents to as much as 1 dollar, with potential U.S. funding under the Emergency Employment Act. He said enforcement would crack down to ensure drivers pay and free spaces remain for shoppers.
The Soledad Brothers murder trial rests with an all white jury of nine women and three men after yesterday's transfer by Superior Court Judge S. Lee Vavaris. John Clutchette aged 28 and Fleeta Drumgo aged 26, both inmates at Soledad Prison, face death charges in the killing of guard John Mills on January 16, 1970.
The U S Command reported a supersonic F4 Phantom fighter bomber missing over Laos with two crewmen unaccounted for while two U S Army UH1 medevac helicopters, aiding South Korean troops, were shot down south of Tuy Hoa. Viet Cong shelled Cao Da Cathedral grounds in Tay Ninh as North Vietnamese mortars hit a Ranger position near Dak To.
Six Pontiac mothers leading the National Action Group walk 600 miles to press a constitutional amendment banning a form of school bus integration. Irene McCabe heads the group aided by supporters with a plan to reach Wellington and Akron, with daily miles about 17 to 18.
A University of Texas scientist reports Mars has oxygen in its atmosphere though not enough for human life. Dr Ed Barker of McDonald Observatory notes the oxygen level is about 110,000th of Earth's, similar to air 60 miles above Earth, based on new spectrograph data and the 107 inch telescope observations.
