Amherst Council Adopts Emergency Income Tax Increase
The Amherst council approved an emergency ordinance raising the city income tax from one half to one percent. Mayor Marvin Davis will study the measure before signing or vetoing, with talk of a referendum petition to put it to a vote. Public comment was limited and many residents criticized the process and lack of prior notice. Nicholas Delamin questioned the lack of a vote and Stipe’s handling of opening debate. The meeting highlighted concerns over funds from the existing tax and how the added revenue will be used. State law allows the tax up to one percent without a referendum.
