Akron March 24 three fire companies fought a night blaze at the Buxbaum Company's Rubber Reclaiming plant destroying about three acres of floor space and causing an estimated $200000 damage. The fire began outside likely from a grass blaze and spread to scrap rubber three boxcars and into the plant.
Berlin reports Nazism celebrates the German Romanian pact as a decisive win against Britain's anti-Hitler drive. Hitler issues a Memel reincorporation decree, restoring citizenship and valid laws, while Bucharest signs a protectorate accord over Slovakia as Germany expands control of raw materials, food, and oil.
Second Lieut. Elton E. Holcombs of the Air Corps Reserve was killed when his pursuit plane crashed at Chesapeake Beach Maryland. A passenger escaped by parachute.
The forecast notes cloud cover and warmer night in Ohio with Saturday showers and mild temperatures. A high pressure ridge extends from Ontario to the South Atlantic. lighter systems bring showers from Iowa to Texas and light snow in the St. Lawrence valley with warmer morning readings in central valleys and the eastern states.

Three hundred men from Wyoming and Montana mobilized with howitzers and mortars to trap fugitive Earl Durand known as Tarzan. Durand, jailed for illegal hunting, escaped authorities after killing two deputies in a blizzard and fled into the Beartooth wilderness where a natural fortress delayed pursuit.
Firemen battled six grass fires in Elyria throughout the day amid a smoke investigation. Engines responded to multiple scenes including 50 acres on Eighteenth Street, 10 city lots on Louisiana Avenue, six city lots on Foster Avenue, 50 by 100 feet on West Sixteenth Street, five acres near Filbert Street, and a final blaze on Abbe Road opposite Taylor Street.
Lorain county commissioners authorize 11300 to F R Walker and Wilbur Watson, architects for two new bridges, as first payment after right of way acceptance and plan approval. Their estimated total fee for the Erie avenue bridge is 36500, five percent of estimated construction cost. A previous payment has been made for the 21st street bridge. The board also approves 800 to Herbert Bring for land lease related to the Erie avenue project.
Elyria faced a day of grass fires with two calls in the morning and one in the afternoon. A frame barn on Abbe road was threatened as three acres burned around the structure, sparked by burning paper from a rubbish fire near a Cleveland street home. A second morning blaze scorched grass on a vacant city lot along Lake avenue, also blamed on burning refuse. The afternoon fire occurred at 418 East Broad street.
Wakeman leader Clifford A. Barden presents a proposal to create a 600 acre deep water lake called French Lake by damming the Vermilion River three miles north of Wakeman in Florence and Wakeman townships. The 730 foot dam would flood river bottom land donated by owners. a road atop the dam could connect Route 60 and West River Road. The plan seeks support from the Ohio Conservation and State Highway Departments as a WPA project.
A stone monument for Camden township World War veterans was awarded to Elyria Monument Works for 3500. Funded by the Camden War Chest, the Rock of Ages granite piece rises 5 1 2 feet with a base and includes the Cross of Flanders eagle and a verse. The names of 15 overseas and five home veterans, plus two who died in France Frank Arnold and Charles Handwick, will be carved. dedication speaker will be Prosecutor Howard R. Butler.
William Barton of Litchfield drove a truck for Fred Hoff Trucking of Wellington when loose gravel on Route 10 east of LaPorte caused the vehicle to skid at 4 30 P M. The truck crashed into a pole, tipping over and breaking the pole with high tension wires. deputies notified the electric company.
President Roosevelt and Secretary Morgenthau urged abolishing the 47 billion dollar full reserve under the social security act and replacing it with a 2.5 to 3 billion dollar contingency reserve. Morgenthau outlined four tax rate plans while Roosevelt warned for a sound reserve to cover pension benefits and to move away from unlimited reserves.
Bratislava reports Hungarian troops crossed into the new state sparking fear of a renewed offensive. A protest to Hitler failed to reassure Slovaks who massed guards and militiamen on a near frontier line as pursuit aircraft patrolled the area.
Washington March 24 The Navy may ask Congress soon to authorize construction of two 45000 ton battleships the largest new fighting ships proposed to date and heavier by 10000 tons than the present six under construction and the largest in the world.
Day to Dayton police report two men stopped J. F. Gardner as he left his store and seized a bank deposit bag containing 1130 dollars. The incident occurred last night, with Gardner alarmed but uninjured. Authorities pursue suspects.
In Columbus Ohio March 24 the Senate appears headed for rejection of a proposal to have the Dies Committee investigate alleged un American activities in Ohio. Sponsor Sen Robert Pollock R Stark postponed a vote to next Tuesday amid protests. The Rules Committee favored a state university and public schools inquiry. Meanwhile the House passed administration backed measures to extend tenure for Adjt Gen Earl F Marx and two aides, 91 to 38, with three Republicans opposing. Debate included charges of headline hunting and junket fears tied to contact with the Dies Committee in Washington.
Manufacturers and Fabricators Inc plans to move laundry equipment production to the Elyria site along with annealing furnaces for the steel industry. Move expected around May 1 with operations by mid May as renovations continue at the American Rolling Mills plant.
Warsaw reports Poland will likely reject a British plan for a united anti Nazi front unless guaranteed a firm military alliance. Britain and France push for immediate conference with Russia and Poland to form a four power bloc with concrete security pledges.
The Rev. Father Edward Seward son of Mr and Mrs J B Seward of 312 Fourth Street was among 10 new American priests received by Pope Pius XII in an audience at Vatican City on Tuesday. Seward who studied in Rome for three years was ordained Sunday by Bishop Ralph Hayes. His parents and two sisters Mary and Catherine Seward attended. The pope spoke to the American priests in English blessing them their families and the faithful in their diocese.
Louis Bromfield internationally known author will be principal speaker at the Lorain County Council of Parent-Teacher Associations Spring meeting at Camden School on April 12. He recently returned to Ohio and now owns a farm near Mansfield. The afternoon session highlights Safety. a 6 p.m. dinner follows.

New York March 24 Tam many Leader James J. Hines awoke in Cell 213 at the Tombs serving four years for protecting Dutch Schultz's lottery racket. His bail bid will be heard Monday by attorney Martin W. Littleton after Lloyd Paul Stryker resigned. If bail fails, transfer to Sing Sing. Hines remains political boss of his district despite imprisonment.
Pan-American Airways giant 74 passenger flying boat the Yankee Clipper was ready to fly its initial trans Atlantic test crossing from Baltimore. Officials sought clearance from Portugal France and Britain for planned stops as the forerunner of regular trans Atlantic service. The test will carry 20 persons on the crossing followed by the start of scheduled passenger service.
In Gallipolis Ohio on March 2 coroner reports Rudy Wayne Henry 12 son of Oakey Henry accidentally hanged himself in their barn while trying to frighten his younger sister Maxine. Coroner Lewis Brown announced the finding today.
