House keeps Great Lakes cleanup funds amid push to cut
The House approved current funding levels and even increases for environmental programs aiding Great Lakes restoration and other waters. The $1.3 trillion package would allocate about $448 million to EPA programs, with the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative receiving $300 million. Supporters argue federal help leverages local efforts and funds thousands of projects. Trump had urged deep cuts or elimination, but lawmakers from both parties defended the programs citing regional benefits and job protection.
