Nursing homes face safety concerns with mentally ill residents
Jeffrey Webster of the Ohio Academy of Nursing Homes argues against treating nursing homes as warehouses for the elderly and the mentally ill. CMS shows about 125,000 young and middle aged adults with psych illness living in homes, raising safety worries as younger residents share facilities with seniors. The piece notes violent incidents, including a 2006 fatal beating of a 77 year old in South Toledo.
