Elyria fights EPA over quarry test and sewer plant funds
Elyria contends with the EPA over testing a Republic Steel quarry on West River Road for contaminants as the city builds new sewer treatment equipment. The dispute stems from a 1984 sewer upgrade dispute and a federal grant, with costs exceeding 100000 in legal fees and an 18 million settlement grant totaling 39 million in improvements. Mayor Keys warns the tangle may influence future EPA dealings.
