Light turnout at Elyria school levy election

Voters in Elyria City School district turnout was light as cold morning temperatures discouraged participation. Lorain County elections director Joan Leyshon said afternoon voting might improve with expected 70 degree weather. The district, with over 29 000 registered voters, has seen past margins around a few hundred votes and a history of failed operating millage and bond requests since 1971.

Levy Chairman Reinker Hospitalized In Critical Condition

Bob Reinker, Elyria school levy campaign chairman, is in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Elyria Memorial Hospital. A flu illness, diabetes issue, and exhaustion led to hospitalization announced at a pep rally at Northwood School. Reinker, owner of Reinker Camera, has worked nearly full time since January to push the emergency school issue.

Columbia High student reinstated after smoking charges

A 16 year old Columbia High student Robert Jenkins was reinstated by the Columbia Board of Education after being expelled for a fourth smoking offense. The board amended the policy to allow expulsion for the third and subsequent violations. His mother filed a 1.1 million federal suit alleging due process violations.

Oberlin eyes tuition hike and faculty raise plan

Oberlin College seeks a 9.6 percent tuition increase next year boosting annual cost from 4200 to about 4710. James Powell presented a 7 percent faculty raise, potentially rising to 10 percent by 1980, with final budget figures due for board approval April 6 and 7.

Jail cell his just dessert in Virginia Beach

Dennis Santos, a self described galloping gourmet, has spent years in and out of Virginia restaurants and the city jail for the same charge refusing to pay He explains he asks staff to call the police when he cant pay and some innkeepers let him work off meals by washing dishes. He says he enjoys meals and people but his pattern remains.
