Iraqs air defenses remain formidable despite U S pounding
Iraqs antiaircraft artillery and surface to air missile networks around Baghdad and other cities remain a significant threat. Gen Richard Myers cautioned that despite Gulf War lessons and decades of bombardment, Baghdad has upgraded its air defense with fiber optic links and dense radar coverage. Intelligence estimates place Iraq at up to 8 000 anti aircraft guns 7 000 heat seeking missiles and 60 SAM batteries, with hardening around key sites and cities.
