Move 15 Backed by Rural Blu
A concerted drive in Columbus to boost the gasoline tax to four cents a gallon was led by the rural bloc in the General Assembly. Sponsors aimed to secure Governor Cooper's support as the effort pressed to rush the measure through adminstration. Two bills, by Sullivan and Bostwick, would allocate funds to county roads and townships, with rural allies seeking to shift statewide revenue to alleviate rural taxes. A rural caucus and talks with the governor followed as the session neared a possible end.
