Miami calm returns after acquittal sparked unrest

Police seal returned to majority black districts as calm settled after the acquittal of officer Luis Alvarez in a shooting death. Over 310 arrests occurred in hours with 80 percent in the first eight hours as riot squads and field forces disrupted potential looting and violence in Overtown and Liberty City.

New York Archbishop Pleads for Kindness at O Connor Pulpit

In his first homily as archbishop of New York at St. Patrick’s Cathedral John J O Connor mixed humor with a sober plea asking clergy and religious to be kind to him. About 3000 priests nuns brothers and seminarians attended the installation ceremony marking his arrival as head of the nation’s fourth largest archdiocese serving 1.8 million Catholics.
