Two Injured In Strike Violence At Steel Plant
Two workers were injured in a strike violence incident at Superior Division of Steel and Tubes Inc. late last night. Ellsworth B. Hardy, 23, of 303 Clark Street, was taken to Memorial Hospital with a possible skull fracture and head injuries, while Raymond E Burke, 40, of R. D. 2. Grafton, suffered head lacerations. The victims, walking on railroad tracks near the plant, were attacked by two men from the rear door as they headed toward a local headquarters used by pickets. Police questioned company officials who denied knowledge of the assault. Plant manager Adams said no negotiations are under way and the plant remains in operation hiring staff. Strikers demand 15 percent wage increases and improved conditions, with 17 written demands submitted last Tuesday. The strike response included bringing in strike breakers by truck and increased police presence.
