S&Ls reopening delayed as Ohio limits thrifts

Ohio governor extends closures of 70 state chartered savings and loans through at least Wednesday and pushes a plan to allow reopenings in days. Legislation would require closed thrifts to obtain FSLIC coverage and prove deposits are secure before resuming business. Critics link crisis to deregulation as depositors face hardship, with emergency session planned to bolster protections.

The Crime Drop Myth and Misleading Statistics

The article argues crime declines nationally due to demographic shifts and reporting changes rather than "good police work." It notes Bureau of Justice Surveys show fewer victims as young people shrink, cites misclassification and undercounting by police and FBI procedures, and warns about sensationalist use of crime data in media and politics. It highlights Bay Village as an example where low crime rates hid the underlying truth of larceny and auto theft shifting to other areas.
