South Vietnamese Forces Lose Bases in Laos Push
Heavy attacks drive Saigon troops back toward the border with Laos. At least 110 South Vietnamese soldiers killed and 203 wounded as Landing Zone Brown and Fire Base Lolo are abandoned. U.S. airlift ferries about 700 soldiers from Brown while NVA mortars and artillery pound remaining positions. Hoover Defends FBI 2.5 Million-Name Data Base

Poisoned gift candy kills man in Ohio neighborhood
UPI reports Clif ford Badger found a box of candy labeled To Our Good Neighbor in his mailbox. He and his wife Helen ate some pieces, he died and she fell gravely ill in Pleasant Home. Coroner J T Questel ruled both poisoned with strychnine. Mrs Badger treated at Lodi Community Hospital.

Navy drug abuse out of control says Chafee
Navy Secretary John Chafee told the Senate that drug abuse in the Navy and Marines is out of control and racial tension has risen sharply. He cited 11,700 men implicated in narcotics in 1970, with 5,000 discharged and 1,700 released by Marines, plus 3,000 warned and 2,000 punished.

Census figures show most American families pay about the same share of earnings in federal, state, and local taxes. The poorest group under $2,000 a year pays the highest percentage, about 27.2 percent, due to regressive state and local taxes, while the highest earners pay far less. Balloon Man of Lorain Dies After Train Crash
Lorain’s longtime Balloon Man Lafayette Jim Mullock died at 72 from injuries after his car was struck by a Norfolk and Western freight train at a Colorado Avenue crossing near American Shipbuilding. The popular painter and former Koehring Co. employee sold balloons to children for decades at West Erie Avenue by Lakeview Park. Mullock, living at 421 Delaware Ave, had retired in 1964 and previously worked as a parking lot attendant. Police say flasher lights were working. no charges were filed. He died at 8:43 pm after the 5:45 pm collision. Witnesses recalled his cheerful balloon sales across years. Obituary on page 10.

Elyria Girl Dies in Valley City Car Crash
A five year old Elyria girl Rebecca Ann Hibler riding with relatives was killed when their car was hit from behind on Route 303 Valley City. Her uncle Russell Hibler and grandmother Margaret Hibler were treated and released. Catherine Dumperth driver of the other car was uninjured.
