Voters in Elyria pass Issue 6 a 0.5 percent five year income tax hike. Unofficial results show 61 percent in favor and 39 percent against, adding about $1 million annually for policing. City leaders and volunteers campaigned hard to secure passage, marking Elyria’s first income tax approval in 24 years.
Hillary Clinton swept Florida North Carolina and other states to build an insurmountable delegate lead as Donald Trump won at least three states while John Kasich trailed. Marco Rubio exited the race leaving Ted Cruz as the remaining rival for the GOP nomination.
Democratic primary results show County Common Pleas Judge Christopher Rothgery winning 18,958 votes or 60 percent over former judge James Burge who totals 12,701 votes or 40 percent in Lorain County. Rothgery vows six more years on the bench with no November challenger. Burge cites past controversies and resignation after a misdemeanor conviction.
In November and again on Tuesday Firelands Schools voting turned against a $35.7 million plan for a combined high and middle school. Unofficial results show 57 percent opposed, 1,949 against and 1,494 in favor, leaving a tough path for a possible August special election. Superintendent Mike Van Gunten says the board must decide next steps to pursue a tax increase.
Lorain County Prosecutor Dennis Will secured a fourth term after defeating Elyria defense attorney JD Tomlinson in the Democratic primary. Will led with 16,057 votes or 53 percent to Tomlinson's 14,175 votes or 47 percent, per unofficial county Board of Elections returns. Will celebrated at his watch party in Avon.
