Hard work linked to lower heart death risk in longshoremen
A 22 year study of 6351 San Francisco Bay longshoremen finds those with heavy or moderate physical activity have half the coronary death rate of light workers, even after adjusting for smoking and hypertension. High activity appears to reduce sudden death risk. benefits arise from short bursts of peak effort rather than steady hard pacing. The study notes exact exercise thresholds are unclear but regular strenuous periods help.
