The Ohio Department of Education will allow districts to administer the Iowa Assessment as an alternative reading test this year to meet the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. State law requires students to reach proficient reading or be held back, with around 35 percent not passing the October Ohio Achievement Assessment.
The policy requires early reading assessment in K through 3 to trigger reading improvement plans. Students must reach a 392 state reading score to advance to fourth grade, with 90 minutes daily instruction if retained. Some moves can occur mid year with improved reading.
A major winter storm brought heavy rain snow and sleet across Lorain County with 4 to 6 inches of new snow and wind gusts around 40 mph. Meteorologists report 75.4 inches of snow this winter region wide about 29 percent above average. A half inch more is forecast between midnight and morning.
Lorain County Engineer Ken Carney announced a $4.2 million contract to widen and reconstruct Route 57 in Grafton to Shelly Co. of Twinsburg. The project expands from two to three lanes over 6,400 feet from Barrington Drive to CSX tracks, with work expected to start in April.

Most items were recovered. a 12 year old faces theft and damaging charges while a 13 year old faces receiving stolen property charges. Both were referred to juvenile court.
