Senate votes 82 to 0 to boost Social Security checks for about 3 million Americans and raise the wage base next years. The measure, attached to a debt-limit bill, would gradually raise tax rates and benefits with changes in 1972 and 1976. A conference with the House is planned to move toward final passage.
Saigon officers report most Laos operation ends in about two weeks with some troops staying at border posts. Brig. Gen. Pham Van Phu says his 1st Division has decimated Hanoi's 559th Logistics Command, targeting Ho Chi Minh trail supply units south of Highway 9, claiming 50 to 80 percent destruction. Weather plans foresee border return by April as rain and fog hinder U.S. air support.
Gov. John J Gilligan unveiled The Ohio Plan a financing proposal for higher education. Under it students at state universities sign to repay about 3000 subsidy over years after graduating and when income rises. Payments start after leaving school at 7000 income rising to a 100000 ceiling 1000 annually. The plan seeks 5 billion in savings over 30 years and includes expanded grant limits and police aid to cities hosting state institutions.
Lorain County plans an administration building and a $700000 decked parking facility in downtown Elyria as part of a long range project including a new jail and possible courthouse remodeling. Court approval clears financing and a tentative start in four to five months with a finish targeted by 1972.
Severe storms spawned multiple tornadoes across Texas and Oklahoma with one death and seven injuries. In East Texas Malta and Daniel's Chapel were hit, five homes destroyed in Daniel's Chapel. Additional twisters touched down near Ardmore and Achille, Oklahoma, with damage to trees, fences, and power lines.
