Norwalk Woman Killed Crossing Road Near Home

Mrs Alice Schaffer 77 of Norwalk struck by car on Rt 601 four miles east of Norwalk. She died at Memorial Hospital about 12 10 pm. Oscar Stewart 26 of New London said he tried to avoid her after sounding horn. She leaves sons Ambrose Irvin and Victor and daughters Martha Tibboles and Leona Waldron with 18 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Funeral Friday at St Paul Catholic Church.

Nine Seamen Rescued After Two Days Adrift

Coast Guard cutter Castle Rock rescued nine frostbitten seamen from a two day ordeal in a waterlogged open boat 175 miles at sea. The Nova Scotia crew from Patricia Sweeney drifted in near freezing temperatures for 44 hours after their vessel capsized in a gale. They were towed toward Boston for hospitalization.

The Berson store fire caused damage estimated in the hundreds of thousands. Firefighters worked through flames that rekindled, forcing crews to recontain the blaze after initial control seemed achieved.

Two Floors Gutted By Blaze At Bersons Store

A major fire at Berson’s Department Store on Broad Street caused extensive damage mainly to the basement and first floor with smoke and water losses heavy for the Singer Sewing Machine Co store and the Savings Deposit and Trust Co. Firemen reported the blaze started in the basement and a firefighter was injured by an explosion as crews fought the flames. Officials said none of the stock was saved and several apartments above the neighboring stores were damaged.

Congress Must Decide On Cuts In Earmarked Budget

President Eisenhower said Congress must choose which government programs to cut or slow to substantially reduce the 1958 budget. He warned substantial reductions require defense, security, veterans benefits, and farm programs to be targeted. He also noted limited potential for savings, as only a small portion of fiscal 1958 spending is administratively reducible. Jordan and Britain end 1948 alliance pact
