Karen CT staff writer reports a circulating tale of a snake in a local discount store in Elyria City. Spokespersons for the store and Elyria Memorial Hospital say there was never a snake and no closing occurred. County sheriff’s department also reports no such incident.
In Damascus Pakistan frees 55 political prisoners and three hijackers release 102 hostages including three Americans amid an 11 day crisis. Named hostages include Frederick Hubbell Craig Clymore and Lawrence Mangum. Two American residents among captors are Mian Ahmad and Musaffar Qureshi. An exact swap plan was still being arranged as the deadline passed.
President Reagan proposals would end subsidies, risk wiping out the Lake Shore Limited route between Cleveland Elyria Chicago and New York. Amtrak officials warn of widespread job losses and contract cancellations while local riders report solid recent service.
Howard J. Fischer president of Citizens Home Savings announced a wrap around mortgage to help buyers. The plan folds a new loan around an existing VA or FHA mortgage so buyers pay a single monthly amount. Most purchases would carry 10 to 12 percent interest and 5 to 10 percent down, with 30 year terms.
