ATOP MT CHARLESTON Nev A baby A-bomb exploded with the fury of 166 boxcar loads of TNT to test a defense theory that artificial smoke can insulate people and cities from heat. The test, part of the 1955 nuclear sequence, used a 300 foot tower and oil smoke above the desert to gauge heat blocking by smoke. Maj Gen William M Creasy described the concept, noting early findings show smoke blankets may reduce heat damage from atomic blasts.
The rain swollen Vermilion River near Wakeman is dragged for four year old Bobby Gibson who slipped into the river while playing near his grandfather Elver Gibson’s farm. His brothers and other youths reported the mishap and a large rescue effort including sheriff deputies state patrolmen fire crews and civil defense workers scoured the river overnight with no success.
State Auditor James R Rhodes reported findings against Vermilion-on-the-Lake and LaGrange officials for holding two offices. Major item is a $1,200 finding against LaGrange water superintendent M B Halliwill for dual roles as village clerk and waterworks chief. Other LaGrange case involves Clarence E Smith for water main repairs while serving on council. Vermilion deputy marshals J Futo and W A Noltner faced smaller, legal-payment findings. Rochester received a clean bill.
Dust clouds the size of 19 000 feet hung over Kansas Missouri Arkansas and Texas as winds eased in Colorado and Wyoming. Tornadoes floods and high winds caused extensive damage across the Ohio Valley and parts of the East with eight dead or missing and fifteen injured. Ohio flood victims included 432 flooded homes and businesses near Cincinnati and surrounding towns.
Weather and hourly figures show increased cloudiness and warmer with scattered thundershowers. Friday highs around 46 to 60, then cooler nights in the 30s. Saturday mainly sunny with a warm afternoon, Sunday partly cloudy, cooler, and scattered showers possible in southern areas.
A spokesman said action on accepting Dr. Arthur Flemming's resignation offer from Ohio Wesleyan University has been postponed until next month. Flemming, on leave, serves in Washington as director of the Office of Defense Mobilization.
John E. Barrison 29 of Willard died in a one car crash three miles north of Mansfield on a county road. The accident occurred early today and authorities investigated the fatal incident.
In Chiba City, Japan, two suspects attacked 10-year-old Etsuo Nishimura Friday night but were knocked to the sidewalk by police after the violent incident. Nishimura, said to be a police school judo expert, remained uncooperative in the immediate aftermath.
Walter Maynard of West Portsmouth faced a flood that broke his home’s foundation as the Ohio River rose. He lit a fire to dry the dwelling, but wind and rain toppled the chimney, fanned the flames, and the house burned to the ground. Total damage listed at 12000 dollars.
Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru personally fought off a would be assassin on the running board of an open car near Nagpur. A rickshaw puller named Babu Rao was arrested after the attacker lunged with a six inch clasp knife. Nehru, unharmed, described the knife as small and said the incident lasted about ten seconds. The PM recalled Gandhi's 1948 assassination and urged no significance be attached to the event.
In Birmingham Arch B Ferrell 36 a former Phenix City legal mind linked to a gambling ring was acquitted on a vote fraud count while facing a murder trial for Albert Patterson case. Deputy Albert Fuller already jailed for bribes received life for first degree murder after six hour verdict. State case hinged on Lamar Reid testimony as a key witness amid indictments in Birmingham.
Senate Leader Knowland urged interception if other options fail to halt the Finnish tanker Aruba carrying jet fuel for Red China. Nationalists warned Communist submarines and planes may escort the ship through a blockade, with the fuel critical to Red China’s jet operations.
In Mount Holly New Jersey a bus carrying seventeen servicemen collided with a rear end of a truck trailer early today. One Marine Pvt Mehmed Aliko suffered fractures of pelvis and hips and was taken to Fort Dix Army hospital. Thirteen sailors and three Marines were injured and transported to Burlington County Hospital and Philadelphia Naval Hospital. Listed injured include Cpl Denis McCarthy Pfe George Docteroft Warren Funk Cirillo Perez Robert Blechinger Dean Parson John Murphy Huey Goff John Roache Norbert Lindeman Jess Jenkins Sebastian Randzo Melvin Field Leslie Eakoff and William Bartley.
