Relief Chief Slams Elyria Policy Short-Sighted
Vincent J. Donahue, state relief examiner, told the League of Women Voters in Elyria that local policy has trimmed relief to a bare minimum, risking malnutrition and tuberculosis. He noted Elyria’s relief costs have fallen from about $4,000 in heavy months to $1,598, contrasting Ohio’s statewide $2.5 million monthly relief spending amid favorable weather and delayed WPA and PWA projects. Donahue’s remarks capped a three month local relief study by the League.

Filibuster Threat In The Senate Over Hatch Act
Washington March 12 Senate opponents of extending the Hatch act to state employed workers funded with federal money threatened to filibuster the bill for a couple of weeks. Assistant Democratic Leader Sherman D. Minton led the opposition after failing to derail Sen. Carl A. Hatch’s original act. The Senate rejected laying the bill aside 36 to 47 and considered amendments to apply the prohibition against political activity to both federal and federally funded state employees, becoming effective only in states enacting similar limits on their workers.
