The proposed $3.4 billion merger of FirstMerit and Huntington Bank will shutter four branches in Lorain and Medina counties, with none closing before 2017. Sheffield Lake seeks grants for parks and public safety upgrades
Grants from 2013 paved a path for Sheffield Lake to pursue matching funds again. Service Superintendent Pat Hastings leads applications for a skate park and Shell Cove Park deck improvements totaling about 85,000 dollars, plus drainage projects. A 100,000 dollar Local Government Safety Capital Grant aims to fund police radio upgrades and a fire station addition, with 20,000 dollars for digitizing vehicle radios to link with Avon Lake and Avon police. Mayor Dennis Bring notes park improvements align with city image goals and that a 150,000 dollar Windsor estate gift could be leveraged to secure matching funds for parks projects.
