Elyria plans wastewater plant upgrade to meet 1982 deadline
Elyria faces EPA requirements to upgrade from just below secondary treatment to tertiary. City engineers cite costs, 5 to 10 percent more cleanliness for 80 to 90 percent more cost, and industry discharges as key hurdles while pretreatment programs push toxic wastes out of sewers. The Black River near Cascade Park shows pollution downstream of the plant, with residents flushing plastics like disposable diapers adding to treatment challenges. Wednesday question: can Elyria meet the 1982 deadline to improve its sewage system.
